Among the alternative routes to visit Machu Picchu we have the Salkantay Trek and the Ausangate Trek; two circuits whose itineraries are a little more demanding than the one done with the Inca Trail Trek. They become, therefore, ideal and very interesting for hiking lovers, although they are also perfectly suitable for adventurers who want to get to know these lesser-known ports up close.

Discover the details and challenges of the two courses!

Nevado Salkantay: “The wild mountain”

On one side we have the snow-capped Salkantay, whose name translated from the Quechua language means “Wild Mountain”. It is also known as “Apu” (Lord) for its great size and majesty.
The “Apu” of Salkantay is located in the Vilcanota mountain range in the Andes of southern Peru, and is the second largest snow-capped mountain in Cusco, after the Ausangate snow-capped mountain.

This mountain rises to 6,271 meters above sea level and, as expected, enjoys a fairly cold climate (reaching several degrees Celsius below 0ºC). However, throughout the Salkantay trek you will see varied weather; Sometimes intense sun during the day and scorching cold at night.

The Salkantay Trek trail connects Cusco with the citadel of Machu Picchu and is approximately 88 kilometers long. This trail is filled with stunning mountain landscapes, lush jungle, rich cloud forests, glacial Andean peaks, and historic Inca passes.

Along the route of the Salkantay Trek and Ausangate Trek, you will travel through landscapes with a wide variety of animals and flowers. Among the flora species, the orchid and the ichu (Andean grass) stand out; while in terms of fauna we can find several species of birds and mammals such as llama, alpaca, condor, spectacled bear, among others.

As we said at the beginning, this hike is less known than the Inca Trail, however, doing it will be one of the most impressive experiences you can have in your life. The Salkantay hike is ranked by travel publications and expert hikers as one of the best hikes in the world.

Salkantay trek 4 days 3 nights

The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu in its 4-day version is an exciting experience that immerses you in the nature and history of the Peruvian Andes. On this trip, you will have the opportunity to explore diverse ecosystems, from high snow-capped mountains to lush tropical forests, while following in the footsteps of the ancient Incas. In addition to enjoying stunning landscapes, such as crystal-clear lagoons and cloud forests, you will also have the opportunity to interact with local communities and learn about their culture and traditions.

Each day of this trek offers a new adventure, from the challenging climb of the Salkantay Pass to hikes through lush valleys and tropical fruit plantations. The highlight is a visit to Machu Picchu at the end of the tour, where you can marvel at the grandeur of this Inca citadel and learn about its fascinating history. With quality services and expert advice from our professionals, the 4-day Salkantay Trek promises an unforgettable experience for lovers of nature and culture.

The challenges of the Salkantay Trek

Salkantay Trek is considered a moderate difficulty trek. Therefore, if you are planning to do the Salkantay Trail, it is best to arrive in Cusco two days in advance so that you can acclimatize. We have already seen that several days of walking are needed and that they are generally long and exhausting.

It is important to mention that the Salkantay Trek is a little more difficult than the Inca Trail, as it passes through a variety of different altitudes and terrain.

Regardless of your fitness level, altitude often becomes an issue to consider. This is why we insist that our visitors arrive early so that they can adapt a little to the altitude and climate of the place.

But that doesn’t mean this pristine terrain requires a certain level of fitness. But as we said, we are in the presence of a moderate difficulty, many sections are difficult with somewhat rugged terrain.

In summary, the Salkantay Trek presents several challenges: low temperatures, cold wind and climbs in certain parts of the route. Therefore, it is very important to prepare well for this experience, both physically and with the appropriate equipment.

4 Day Ausangate Hike

The 4-day Ausangate trek offers a unique experience amidst the stunning natural beauty of the Peruvian Andes. From day one, you’ll immerse yourself in spectacular landscapes, climbing trails surrounded by imposing mountains and lush green valleys. During the tour you will have the opportunity to enjoy crystal clear lagoons, such as Laguna Yanacocha, and contemplate the majesty of the Ausangate Glacier, which will accompany you for much of your trip. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to interact with local communities and learn about their traditions, thus enriching your cultural experience.

Every day of this hike is filled with exciting adventures, from challenging climbs to scenic descents and visits to iconic locations like Apacheta Pass and Colored Mountain. In addition, you will have a professional team who will guide you at all times and provide you with amenities such as comfortable tents, high-end cooking equipment and delicious meals prepared by our specialized mountain chefs. The 4-day Ausangate trek is a unique opportunity to connect with nature, explore stunning landscapes and have an unforgettable experience in the Peruvian Andes.

The challenges of the Ausangate march

The walk through the snow-covered Ausangate is considered adventure tourism, because as we could see, along the entire route you can see rock formations covered with tongues of ice.

Therefore, to do this tour it is recommended to be in good physical shape and to have some experience in hiking and mountaineering. Note that this is a difficult and unmarked route which sometimes exceeds 5,200 meters in altitude; Not to mention that weather conditions change suddenly.

Now, as with the Salkantay Trek, it is recommended to arrive two days in advance in Cusco, to be able to acclimatize.

Most people who visit Cusco limit themselves to hiking the Inca Trail and other alternative routes such as the Salkantay Trek, keeping the Ausangate Trek free of crowds, so if this condition is essential for you, it would be great if you take advantage of this opportunity. . . to do this particular tour.
