Detailed Itinerary

Your adventure begins early in the morning.

We'll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and begin our journey through the beautiful Andean landscapes to Mollepata, where we'll stop for breakfast.

Afterward, we'll continue to the starting point of our trek (Balcompata), where we'll meet our trekking gear and begin our adventure.

The trail gradually ascends with a few switchbacks until we reach a water channel, leading through the spectacular Soraypampa Valley, while the surrounding mountains become increasingly impressive.

Upon arriving in Soraypampa, we begin our hike to Humantay Lagoon. The trail becomes more challenging as we approach the lagoon, but every step is worthwhile when its turquoise waters and the imposing mountains that surround it appear before us. At 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level, Humantay Lagoon is one of the greatest natural attractions on this route.

After enjoying the scenery and taking photographs, we return to Soraypampa and enjoy lunch prepared by our mountain chef (around 2 pm) in our mountain cabin.

Then we have the afternoon free to help us acclimatize to the altitude.

As night falls, our chef prepares dinner using fresh, local ingredients.

And then comes one of the most special moments of the day: looking up at the Andean sky, far from the city lights.

Tonight, the mountains will be your backdrop.

Today promises to be the most demanding and spectacular day of our trek.

We wake up early and start the day with a hot coffee or coca tea before beginning the ascent to Salkantay Pass.

The landscape becomes increasingly breathtaking as we gain altitude.

The mountains rise around us, and the terrain takes on a more Andean and majestic character.

At approximately 4,630 meters, we reach the highest point of our journey.

Take a moment to breathe, look around, and appreciate the immensity of the mountains.

This is Salkantay.

Our guide will also explain the ancestral relationship of the Andean communities with the mountains and the tradition of giving thanks to Pachamama, Mother Earth.

From the pass, we begin our descent.

Little by little, the landscape changes from the cold, high-altitude mountains to warmer, greener valleys.

Along the way, we can observe the transformation of the environment and, with a bit of luck, some Andean fauna, such as the viscacha. Once we arrive at Wayracmachay, where our glass domes are located, our mountain chef will give us a culinary lesson on how to prepare our food in the mountains. In the afternoon, we will have free time to appreciate the mountains like Tucarway.

Today the Andes begin to reveal another side of themselves. After breakfast, we continue our trek through the cloud forest, following trails surrounded by tropical vegetation, waterfalls, small streams, and farming communities. As we descend, you'll notice the climate becoming warmer and the vegetation increasingly lush. During the hike, we'll observe a variety of plants and orchids native to the area, until we reach our lunch spot in Collpapampa. After lunch, we'll continue our excursion towards Wiñayphoco, where you'll see tropical fruits and try passion fruit juice. In the afternoon, we'll visit a local organic coffee farm. Here, you'll learn about the journey of Peruvian coffee from plant to cup. You'll discover how the beans are harvested and processed, how they're roasted, and finally, how to prepare a good cup of coffee. You'll also have the opportunity to taste freshly brewed coffee and meet the local producers. This isn't just a tasting; it's a chance to understand how the families in this part of the cloud forest live and work. After several hours of hiking, it will be time to slow down. Enjoy a hot shower, relax, and let the sounds of nature replace the noise of everyday life. In the evening, we'll enjoy dinner surrounded by nature. Tonight, you don't need to look for the sky; you'll sleep under it.

Today, Machu Picchu begins to appear on our horizon. After breakfast, we begin the ascent to Llactapata.

The trail winds through the cloud forest, and as we gain altitude, the valley begins to open up before us. After the climb, one of the most spectacular views of the entire trek unfolds:

Machu Picchu across the valley. From Llactapata, you can contemplate the ancient Inca citadel from a completely different perspective.

Take your time. Enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and savor this moment. Here, you'll understand that the journey is not just about the destination.

After enjoying the viewpoint, we descend into the valley and continue our journey to the home of a local family, where we'll stop for lunch.

In addition to enjoying a meal prepared with local products, this visit allows us to directly support a local family and experience a more authentic side of life in the valley.

After lunch, we continue to Hidroeléctrica, where we'll board the tourist train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we'll check into our hotel. You'll have time to take a shower, explore the town, or simply relax.

In the evening, we'll enjoy dinner and prepare for the big day ahead. Tomorrow, you'll visit Machu Picchu.

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast at your hotel; today is the day you've been waiting for.

We'll take the bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Your professional local guide will accompany you on the tour of the citadel, sharing its history, architecture, culture, and the significance of this extraordinary Inca sanctuary.

During the tour, you'll see plazas, temples, ceremonial spaces, and some of the most important areas of Machu Picchu.

But don't rush; there will also be time to stop, observe, and simply enjoy the site.

After the guided tour, we'll return to Aguas Calientes.

You'll have free time for lunch or to explore the town a bit more before collecting your belongings and boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo.

In Ollantaytambo, our private transportation will be waiting to take you back to Cusco. Estimated arrival in Cusco: approximately 7:30 p.m.

Your Salkantay adventure ends here, but the mountains, the landscapes, the people you met, and Machu Picchu will stay with you long after you return home.

Our goal is simple: to make your journey unforgettable and leave you eager to return. We offer high-quality, personalized service where you set the pace and never feel rushed.

We take pride in being a responsible and sustainable operator. Our team is family to us, and we pay fair wages because their dedication is what makes every trek possible.

Small Groups

Our groups are limited to a maximum of 10 travelers (minimum 4), so you receive real attention from your guide and enjoy a more exclusive, authentic experience, unlike companies that run much larger groups.

Luxury Salkantay Trek | A Route Like No Other

Our Luxury Salkantay itinerary is designed to stand apart from standard Salkantay offerings, and it holds its own even against the Inca Trail. You cross the high Salkantay Pass beneath glaciers, wander through lush cloud forest and coffee-growing valleys, and approach Machu Picchu gradually. Each day brings a new landscape, and each night brings a new place to rest. The final arrival feels like the reward it is.

Our Guiding Staff

All our guides are highly qualified professionals, certified by GERCETUR and MINEDU. Each year they renew their training in first aid and foreign languages, so you are in safe, well-informed hands.

Our cooks also receive ongoing training and lead our mountain cooking classes, serving fresh, delicious meals at altitude. We are proud of our entire team, including our logistics staff and muleteers, who work tirelessly through every challenge on the trail. Without them, these adventures would not be possible.

Our Equipment

Our guides, cooks, muleteers, and support staff are all fully equipped with professional gear. We also go a step further than most companies by giving every hiker a welcome kit that includes:

  • Rain poncho
  • Backpack rain cover
  • Distinctive trek shirt
  • Toilet paper

On top of this, we provide comfortable equipment so you can rest well after each day on the trail.

Our Luxury Salkantay Accommodations

After each day on the trail, you'll rest in carefully chosen places that combine comfort, scenery, and the character of each region.

Night 1: Domes or rustic huts beneath Humantay and Salkantay (3,900 m)
Wake up surrounded by the Humantay and Salkantay mountains. Our warm, comfortable accommodations are designed for the high-altitude climate. On clear nights, the sky opens up to a spectacular view of the Milky Way.

Night 2: Luxury dome camp after the Salkantay Pass
After crossing the Salkantay Pass, you'll arrive at our luxury dome campsite, with sweeping panoramic views. Each dome has a private bathroom and shower, so you can recover from a big day and feel completely at home.

Night 3: Private rooms among coffee, avocado, and banana plantations
Descend into the warm valleys and spend the night in private rooms surrounded by coffee, avocado, and banana plantations, a welcome change of scenery after the high mountains.

After these nights of well-earned rest, you'll wake up fully recharged and ready to explore Machu Picchu.

Travel Tips & Recommendations

Important Information

Please review these recommendations to ensure you have the best possible experience on your adventure.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOUR 4-DAY SALKANTAY TRIP.

Please read all instructions from Guiding Cusco carefully before booking; this will greatly assist you with your trip to Cusco and Salkantay.

ACCLIMATIZATION
To undertake the Salkantay trek, it is necessary to spend at least two days in the city of Cusco to better adjust to the altitude.
BRIEFING
A Guiding Cusco staff member (your guide) will meet you at your hotel to provide clear, precise information about your Salkantay trip, including weather details and the size of your group. This meeting is crucial, as it covers the final important details before you embark on your mountain adventure.
WHERE CAN I LEAVE MY LUGGAGE?
Regarding your travel luggage: in Cusco—a major tourist hub—all accommodations and hotels are familiar with these multi-day excursions and will store your belongings while you are away. If you are changing hotels, you may leave your luggage at our office, and we will keep it safe for you during your excursion.
CAN I CHANGE MY TRIP DATE?
Unfortunately, NO. The Salkantay trek is a multi-day trip that requires advance organization. This is particularly critical regarding Machu Picchu entry tickets, which are tied to specific dates; changing a ticket is not feasible, as many travelers are waiting for tickets, and altering yours would result in its loss.
HOW DO I BOOK MY TRIP?
To book the 4-day/3-night Salkantay trek, we require specific information from you via the booking form. Guiding Cusco Expeditions needs details for every traveler in your party.

we cannot purchase tickets that might later be rejected or go unused. To make a reservation, we need:

  • Full name(s) of the traveler(s) exactly as it appears in their passport(s)
  • Passport number(s)
  • Date(s) of birth
  • Gender
  • Nationality

Secondly, we require a deposit of $595.00 USD per person to secure the necessary permits for Salkantay and Machu Picchu and to organize the trip. Payments can be made securely and reliably via interbank transfer, online payment, OpenPay, or through our website.

THE WEATHER AT SALKANTAY
Weather conditions at Salkantay are unpredictable; rain can occur at any moment, so bringing a rain jacket or poncho is essential—especially given the changeable climate of the Peruvian Andes.
WHAT TO BRING FOR SALKANTAY
Bring clothing suitable for all four seasons. During the first few days, you will be exposed to cold temperatures and a chance of rain, so warm layers and rain gear are necessary. However, the temperature shifts over the next two days; it becomes hot rather than cold, and you may even want to wear shorts. Depending on the season, mosquitoes can be plentiful during these final days, so please bring insect repellent.
WHERE WILL WE BE DROPPED OFF AFTER THE SALKANTAY EXCURSION?
Our service includes pickup from your hotel (or a nearby location). At the end of the excursion, we drop you off at your hotel if vehicle access is available; if not, we will drop you off as close as possible.
WHAT KIND OF MEALS ARE PROVIDED?
Our mountain meals consist of Peruvian cuisine adapted to each traveler's dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free), including vegetables, rice, potatoes, meat, etc.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THE SALKANTAY TREK?

For travelers who hike regularly, the Salkantay trek will not be very difficult—unless you struggle with altitude. For those not accustomed to multi-day hikes, there are options to ride horses without missing out on the scenery.
SHOULD I BRING EXTRA MONEY?
Yes! It is a good idea to bring extra money for emergencies or for little treats along the way (such as coffee tastings, fruit, or extra activities like ziplining or the Cocalmayo hot springs).

IS TIPPING THE STAFF NECESSARY?
For this type of service, after several days of care, it is customary to show appreciation to our staff. Although they receive fair wages, a financial token of appreciation motivates them to continue working with great enthusiasm (suggested amount: 10%).

Amazing trip An Unforgettable Experience in Ausangate – Guiding Cusco Treking Ausangate with Guiding Cusco was one of the best experiences of our trip to Peru. From the very beginning, everything was very well organized, and the team made us feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout the entire adventure. I want to give a special mention to Nazario, our cook, because he truly surprised us with the quality of the food. Being in such a remote place and at such a high altitude, we never imagined we would eat so well. Each meal was different, plentiful, fresh, and delicious. After long hikes, arriving at camp and finding a hot and well-prepared meal was incredible. We also want to give a special thanks to Percy, our muleteer, who did an excellent job throughout the trek. He was always attentive to the equipment, the horses, and making sure everything was ready at each campsite. It's clear he knows the mountain perfectly and works with great dedication. The campsites were excellent; everything was prepared and organized so we could rest after each day of hiking. Sleeping surrounded by the Ausangate mountains and waking up to those landscapes was simply spectacular. But the best part was the team. Everyone was kind, attentive, and professional, and we truly felt like we weren't just tourists on a tour, but rather having an authentic experience in the Andes. I highly recommend Guiding Cusco for Ausangate. If you're looking for a local, professional company with excellent organization, good food, good campsites, and a team that genuinely cares about its travelers, this is an excellent choice. Thanks to Nazario, Percy, and the entire Guiding Cusco team for making our Ausangate trip an unforgettable experience!

reliable and individual support We had direct contact with our guide from the beginning and were completely satisfied with his support. He was extremely accommodating, flexible, and addressed our wishes at all times. His advice on choosing the tour was particularly helpful: Based on his experience, he recommended a route to us where there were significantly fewer people and which suited us very well. We also felt in the best of hands with him during the tour itself. He accompanied us up the mountain and safely back down with a lot of experience and prudence. Overall, the entire service—from planning and personal support to execution—was more than satisfactory.

Incredible Trek, Incredible Guide! We did the 5 day/4 night Salktanay trek and it was awesome! Edwin is a local celebrity on the trail-- he knows every guide and all the community members along the trail. He was able to seamlessly resolve little the inevitable little hiccups (arranging cars, etc) and even helped us snag some Circuit 2 (the best circuit) Machu Picchu tickets when we arrived in Aquas Calientes. One thing that's special about Guiding Cusco Expeditions is that it's a smaller outfit and they do things a little differently from the two big trekking companies. Edwin knew different trails that were less crowded (both people and mules) that were far more beautiful than the mainline trails that we could see the other group taking across the valley. Edwin is also extremely knowledgable about the local ecology, plants, and birds. After going over the Salktanay pass and dropping into the cloud forest, he pointed out all the different species of flowers and even the wild orchids along the trail. I also have to give a special shout out to Nassario, the mountain chef who accompanied us for most of the trek-- every day he put together these incredible meals that were diverse, full of local flavor, and perfect for a long day of trekking. He even taught us how to make lomo saltado one afternoon. We had a fantastic experience and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Guiding Cusco Expedition-- they're a really awesome outfit who were a pleasure to work with at every step of the journey and we had an absolute blast.

Six Stars for Guiding Cusco Expeditions Outstanding Trip! Pick Guiding Cusco Expeditions. We just completed the 5 day / 4 night Salkantay Trek with Guiding Cusco Expeditions led by expert guide Edwin and chef Nosario. I cannot recommend Guiding Cusco more highly. First of all, the trek is spectacular. Every day is a completely new ecological environment, from high alpine peaks to a rainforest full of wild orchids and half a dozen different species of hummingbirds. Guiding Cusco Expeditions is a particularly good guide company. Coordinating with Lisbet over WhatsApp prior to the trip was easy and efficient. Edwin has over a decade of experience guiding in the Andes and he and Lisbet recently started Guiding Cusco. The entire trip was both safe, fun, and exceeded anything I could have organized myself. Edwin is extremely knowledgeable about history, geography, and the natural world and a true pleasure to learn from. Edwin also made our hike absolutely seamless, from the hotel pickup to the pass at 15,000 feet, to the 45th mile. He is able to juggle many logistics while making everything seem effortless (certainly felt that way to us). The accommodations were really great. Edwin knows the region very well and our hike benefited from his expertise. For example, there were several parts of the trek where we would see other companies walking along the road whereas Edwin would take us on forested trails with waterfalls and wildlife. I also have a severe food allergy and Guiding Cusco Expeditions expertly accommodated this throughout the entire trip. Guiding Cusco Expeditions was extremely diligent. They even led a cooking class one day on the trail! It was spectacular to cook classic Peruvian cuisine surrounded by the peaks of the Andes. Ausangate 4d3n + Rainbow Mountain I went with Guiding Cusco for a private Ausangate + Rainbow Mountain trip organised by Lisbet and guided by Edwin at the end of April 2026. They are amazing team and has been the easiest and professional operator to deal with. Lisbet is extremely responsive on Whatsapp communication and went above and beyond to help me in my last minute travel plan. Edwin and his team looked after me very well during the trek. Vegetarian food prepared by Nazario was amazing and you will never ever go hungry! Any extra food is shared with local community so nothing goes to waste. Guiding Cusco is the operator to go with particularly if you are looking for experienced local guide for your trekking around Cusco.

How difficult is the Salkantay Trek Luxury Star Dome Experience?

The Salkantay Trek Luxury Star Dome Experience is a challenging trek that requires a good level of physical fitness. The most demanding section is the ascent to Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m (15,190 ft), followed by a long descent into the cloud forest. Days 2 and 4 are the most challenging, while the itinerary also includes more moderate hiking days. No technical climbing experience is required.

Is the Salkantay Luxury Star Dome Trek a small-group experience?

Yes. The experience is operated as a small-group trek, with groups of 2 to 8 travelers according to the current tour information. The smaller group size allows for more personalized attention from the local guide and greater flexibility during the trek.

What should I pack for the Luxury Star Dome Salkantay Trek?

Bring a small daypack of approximately 25–35 liters for the daily hikes. Essential items include your original passport, water, waterproof clothing, trekking shoes or boots, warm layers, gloves, sun protection, a hat, personal medication, a camera or phone, and a portable charger. A duffel bag is provided for the belongings you do not need to carry during the daily hikes. The current packing information indicates a maximum of approximately 7 kg for the duffel bag.

Are meals included during the Salkantay Luxury Star Dome Trek?

The hiking duration varies by day. The itinerary includes approximately 5–6 hours on Day 1, 6–7 hours on Day 2, 6–7 hours on Day 3, and 5–6 hours on Day 4. The most demanding days are Day 2, when you cross Salkantay Pass, and Day 4, when you hike to Llactapata before continuing toward Aguas Calientes.

Does the Salkantay Trek include the train to Aguas Calientes?

Yes. On Day 4, after hiking from Loreta to Llactapata and continuing to Hidroeléctrica, the itinerary includes a tourist train to Aguas Calientes. This allows you to finish the day's journey without walking the entire route along the railway to Machu Picchu Pueblo.

What is a Star Dome on the Salkantay Trek?

A Star Dome is a glass-style mountain accommodation designed to give travelers a closer connection with the surrounding landscape and night sky. During the second night of this itinerary, you stay at the Star Domes in Wayracmachay after crossing Salkantay Pass.

If you want to support a local business and enjoy hiking in small groups with great vibes, pick Guiding Cusco Expeditions. You'll have an amazing time.
