Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Huchuy Qosqo?

Huchuy Qosqo is a significant Inca archaeological complex perched on a plateau overlooking the Sacred Valley. Its name means "Little Cusco" in Quechua. It served as a royal estate (attributed to Inca Viracocha) and an administrative center.

Where is it located?

It is located directly above the town of Lamay in the Sacred Valley, approximately 33 km north of Cusco (as the crow flies), but accessible via high Andean trails.

What is the altitude?

The archaeological site sits at approximately 3,650 meters (11,975 ft). However, the hike involves crossing a pass that reaches 4,200 meters (13,779 ft).

How difficult is the hike?

It is considered Moderate. It requires a basic level of fitness to handle the ascent to the pass and, more importantly, the steep descent to Lamay which can be hard on the knees.

How long is the hike?

The total hiking time is usually between 6 to 7 hours, including the guided visit and lunch break.

Do I need to acclimatize?

Yes, absolutely. Since you will be hiking above 4,000m, we recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before attempting this trek.

When is the best time to go?

The best season is the Dry Season (May to September). During the rainy season (November to March), the trail (especially the descent) can become muddy and slippery.
