Detailed Itinerary

Day 1
Day 1

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Humantay Lake – Soraypampa

Hiking distance: approximately 8 km / 4.97 miles
Hiking time: approximately 5-6 hours
Maximum altitude: 4,200 m / 13,780 ft
Accommodation: Mountain cabin
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks

Your adventure begins early in the morning.

We'll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and begin our journey through the beautiful Andean landscapes to Mollepata, where we'll stop for breakfast.

Afterward, we'll continue to the starting point of our trek (Balcompata), where we'll meet our trekking gear and begin our adventure.

The trail gradually ascends with a few switchbacks until we reach a water channel, leading through the spectacular Soraypampa Valley, while the surrounding mountains become increasingly impressive.

Upon arriving in Soraypampa, we begin our hike to Humantay Lagoon. The trail becomes more challenging as we approach the lagoon, but every step is worthwhile when its turquoise waters and the imposing mountains that surround it appear before us. At 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level, Humantay Lagoon is one of the greatest natural attractions on this route.

After enjoying the scenery and taking photographs, we return to Soraypampa and enjoy lunch prepared by our mountain chef (around 2 pm) in our mountain cabin.

Then we have the afternoon free to help us acclimatize to the altitude.

As night falls, our chef prepares dinner using fresh, local ingredients.

And then comes one of the most special moments of the day: looking up at the Andean sky, far from the city lights.

Tonight, the mountains will be your backdrop.

Day 2
Day 2

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Wayracmachay (Cooking Class).

Hiking distance: approximately 14 km / 8.7 miles
Hiking time: approximately 6-7 hours
Maximum altitude: 4,630 m / 15,190 ft
Accommodation: Start Domes
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks

Today promises to be the most demanding and spectacular day of our trek.

We wake up early and start the day with a hot coffee or coca tea before beginning the ascent to Salkantay Pass.

The landscape becomes increasingly breathtaking as we gain altitude.

The mountains rise around us, and the terrain takes on a more Andean and majestic character.

At approximately 4,630 meters, we reach the highest point of our journey.

Take a moment to breathe, look around, and appreciate the immensity of the mountains.

This is Salkantay.

Our guide will also explain the ancestral relationship of the Andean communities with the mountains and the tradition of giving thanks to Pachamama, Mother Earth.

From the pass, we begin our descent.

Little by little, the landscape changes from the cold, high-altitude mountains to warmer, greener valleys.

Along the way, we can observe the transformation of the environment and, with a bit of luck, some Andean fauna, such as the viscacha. Once we arrive at Wayracmachay, where our glass domes are located, our mountain chef will give us a culinary lesson on how to prepare our food in the mountains. In the afternoon, we will have free time to appreciate the mountains like Tucarway.

Day 3
Day 3

Day 3: Wayracmachay - Collpapampa – Loreta (Coffee Tour)

Hiking distance: approximately 20 km / 12.4 miles
Hiking time: approximately 6–7 hours
Altitude: approximately 2,000–2,750 m
Accommodation: Jungle Dome
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Today the Andes begin to reveal another side of themselves.

After breakfast, we continue our trek through the cloud forest, following trails surrounded by tropical vegetation, waterfalls, small streams, and farming communities.

As we descend, you'll notice the climate becoming warmer and the vegetation increasingly lush.

During the hike, we'll observe a variety of plants and orchids native to the area, until we reach our lunch spot in Collpapampa.

After lunch, we'll continue our excursion towards Wiñayphoco, where you'll see tropical fruits and try passion fruit juice. In the afternoon, we'll visit a local organic coffee farm.

Here, you'll learn about the journey of Peruvian coffee from plant to cup. You'll discover how the beans are harvested and processed, how they're roasted, and finally, how to prepare a good cup of coffee.

You'll also have the opportunity to taste freshly brewed coffee and meet the local producers. This isn't just a tasting; it's a chance to understand how the families in this part of the cloud forest live and work.

After several hours of hiking, it will be time to slow down. Enjoy a hot shower, relax, and let the sounds of nature replace the noise of everyday life.

In the evening, we'll enjoy dinner surrounded by nature. Tonight, you don't need to look for the sky; you'll sleep under it.

Day 4
Day 4

Day 4: Loreta – Llactapata – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes

Hiking distance: approximately 15 km / 9.32 miles
Hiking time: approximately 5-6 hours
Maximum altitude: approximately 2,840 m / 9,318 ft
Accommodation: 4-star hotel in Aguas Calientes
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Today, Machu Picchu begins to appear on our horizon. After breakfast, we begin the ascent to Llactapata.

The trail winds through the cloud forest, and as we gain altitude, the valley begins to open up before us. After the climb, one of the most spectacular views of the entire trek unfolds:

Machu Picchu across the valley. From Llactapata, you can contemplate the ancient Inca citadel from a completely different perspective.

Take your time. Enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and savor this moment. Here, you'll understand that the journey is not just about the destination.

After enjoying the viewpoint, we descend into the valley and continue our journey to the home of a local family, where we'll stop for lunch.

In addition to enjoying a meal prepared with local products, this visit allows us to directly support a local family and experience a more authentic side of life in the valley.

After lunch, we continue to Hidroeléctrica, where we'll board the tourist train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we'll check into our hotel. You'll have time to take a shower, explore the town, or simply relax.

In the evening, we'll enjoy dinner and prepare for the big day ahead. Tomorrow, you'll visit Machu Picchu.

Day 5
Day 5

Day 5: Machu Picchu – Cusco

Guided tour: approximately 3 hours
Machu Picchu Altitude: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
Meals: Breakfast

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast at your hotel; today is the day you've been waiting for.

We'll take the bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Your professional local guide will accompany you on the tour of the citadel, sharing its history, architecture, culture, and the significance of this extraordinary Inca sanctuary.

During the tour, you'll see plazas, temples, ceremonial spaces, and some of the most important areas of Machu Picchu.

But don't rush; there will also be time to stop, observe, and simply enjoy the site.

After the guided tour, we'll return to Aguas Calientes.

You'll have free time for lunch or to explore the town a bit more before collecting your belongings and boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo.

In Ollantaytambo, our private transportation will be waiting to take you back to Cusco. Estimated arrival in Cusco: approximately 7:30 p.m.

Your Salkantay adventure ends here, but the mountains, the landscapes, the people you met, and Machu Picchu will stay with you long after you return home.

Incredible Trek, Incredible Guide! We did the 5 day/4 night Salktanay trek and it was awesome! Edwin is a local celebrity on the trail-- he knows every guide and all the community members along the trail. He was able to seamlessly resolve little the inevitable little hiccups (arranging cars, etc) and even helped us snag some Circuit 2 (the best circuit) Machu Picchu tickets when we arrived in Aquas Calientes. One thing that's special about Guiding Cusco Expeditions is that it's a smaller outfit and they do things a little differently from the two big trekking companies. Edwin knew different trails that were less crowded (both people and mules) that were far more beautiful than the mainline trails that we could see the other group taking across the valley. Edwin is also extremely knowledgable about the local ecology, plants, and birds. After going over the Salktanay pass and dropping into the cloud forest, he pointed out all the different species of flowers and even the wild orchids along the trail. I also have to give a special shout out to Nassario, the mountain chef who accompanied us for most of the trek-- every day he put together these incredible meals that were diverse, full of local flavor, and perfect for a long day of trekking. He even taught us how to make lomo saltado one afternoon. We had a fantastic experience and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Guiding Cusco Expedition-- they're a really awesome outfit who were a pleasure to work with at every step of the journey and we had an absolute blast.

Six Stars for Guiding Cusco Expeditions Outstanding Trip! Pick Guiding Cusco Expeditions. We just completed the 5 day / 4 night Salkantay Trek with Guiding Cusco Expeditions led by expert guide Edwin and chef Nosario. I cannot recommend Guiding Cusco more highly. First of all, the trek is spectacular. Every day is a completely new ecological environment, from high alpine peaks to a rainforest full of wild orchids and half a dozen different species of hummingbirds. Guiding Cusco Expeditions is a particularly good guide company. Coordinating with Lisbet over WhatsApp prior to the trip was easy and efficient. Edwin has over a decade of experience guiding in the Andes and he and Lisbet recently started Guiding Cusco. The entire trip was both safe, fun, and exceeded anything I could have organized myself. Edwin is extremely knowledgeable about history, geography, and the natural world and a true pleasure to learn from. Edwin also made our hike absolutely seamless, from the hotel pickup to the pass at 15,000 feet, to the 45th mile. He is able to juggle many logistics while making everything seem effortless (certainly felt that way to us). The accommodations were really great. Edwin knows the region very well and our hike benefited from his expertise. For example, there were several parts of the trek where we would see other companies walking along the road whereas Edwin would take us on forested trails with waterfalls and wildlife. I also have a severe food allergy and Guiding Cusco Expeditions expertly accommodated this throughout the entire trip. Guiding Cusco Expeditions was extremely diligent. They even led a cooking class one day on the trail! It was spectacular to cook classic Peruvian cuisine surrounded by the peaks of the Andes. If you want to support a local business and enjoy hiking in small groups with great vibes, pick Guiding Cusco Expeditions. You'll have an amazing time.

Ausangate 4d3n + Rainbow Mountain I went with Guiding Cusco for a private Ausangate + Rainbow Mountain trip organised by Lisbet and guided by Edwin at the end of April 2026. They are amazing team and has been the easiest and professional operator to deal with. Lisbet is extremely responsive on Whatsapp communication and went above and beyond to help me in my last minute travel plan. Edwin and his team looked after me very well during the trek. Vegetarian food prepared by Nazario was amazing and you will never ever go hungry! Any extra food is shared with local community so nothing goes to waste. Guiding Cusco is the operator to go with particularly if you are looking for experienced local guide for your trekking around Cusco.

Macchu Picchu and rainbow mountain I can’t recommend our guides Lisbet and Edwin from the Cusco team highly enough! Despite our last-minute planning and Machu Picchu’s popular circuits being fully booked, they came up with an out-of-the-box solution that let us explore two circuits anyway. We squeezed in both Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu in just two days—Lisbet and Edwin even met us at 7:30 PM to brief us on the tours, so we could hit the ground running without any stress. The logistics were seamless: pickup at 4:30 AM for Rainbow Mountain, then a smooth handoff to Olantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, with another team member waiting right at the train station. Their care, responsibility, and attention to every detail made the whole experience mind-blowing. Thank you, Lisbet, Edwin, and the entire team—you’re absolute stars!

Experience of lifetime We did the four-day Salkantay trek with this company and were extremely pleased with the overall experience. Everything was very well organized, from transportation and accommodations to meals and daily logistics, which made the hike feel smooth and stress-free. Our guide, Edwin, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, calm, attentive, and clearly very experienced. He kept a close eye on everyone, shared insight into the landscape and local culture, and struck a great balance between professionalism and warmth. His steady presence made a challenging trek feel both safe and enjoyable. We would happily recommend this company to anyone considering the Salkantay hike.
Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I suffer from altitude sickness?

We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days before the trek to acclimatize. However, if you feel unwell, our guides are highly trained to assist you. We carry oxygen and a first aid kit. In severe cases, we can arrange for an alternative plan or safe return.

How far in advance should I book?

For the Salkantay Trek and specifically this Culinary edition, we recommend booking at least 3-4 months in advance, especially during the high season (May-September), to secure Machu Picchu tickets and the best train schedules.

What type of accommodation is included?

This tour includes 3 nights in comfortable rustic accommodations made by locals (huts or domes) depending on availability, and 1 night in a selected 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes (day 4), chosen for its cleanliness, location, and comfort.

Five days of hiking in Cusco.! Amazing experience! The smoll group made the Salkantay Trek feel very personal and relaxed. The guides were friendly, supportive, and the views were absolutely unforgettable. Reaching Machupicchu after five days of hiking was truly special.
